The term “Queer” is often used as an umbrella term that sometime defines sexual orientation of an individual such as lesbian, gay, transgender and those that do not conform to popular/ known societal norms. The LGBT community in India had a historic moment on September 6, 2018, when the Supreme Court of India decriminalized homosexuality. Even though the government accepts the LGBT community as they are, there is still discrimination and bias towards the community from the society that further causes social, emotional and mental health issues for various members of the Queer community.

In this MHT Live with Ms. Deepapriya explores the tips and tricks on becoming a responsible ally and supporting the LGBTQ+ community through proper use of language. Ms. Vishwanathan, a clinical psychologist based out of Mumbai, explains the role of mental health and sexuality in this MHT Live.

The LGBTQ+ community in India still undergoes psychological challenges such as self-isolation, prejudice from the society and other relationship issues with family and peers. All these factors can hampers anybody’s mental health, that is why as individuals of the society it is imperative to develop a
“Queer Lens” with includes using the right language, behaviour, being human and breaking stereotypes and stigmas.
