Caregiving, especially long term caregiving, has an impact on the mental as well as the emotional health of the caregiver. This podcast episode is joined by Ms. Rikhia Sen Gupta where she discusses the role of acceptance in caregiver mental health.
Ms. Rikhia is a mother of a child with special needs; Rohaan. She is a relentless and resilient mother, housewife, trained Bharatnatyam dancer, teacher and most importantly a highly motivated caregiver who has got past all societal stereotypes to get what is best for her child.
As a mother, it was very difficult for Ms. Rikhia to accept that her son had special needs. She tells the listeners in this podcast episode about that phase in her life when she couldn’t sleep for nights, had lost her appetite and dealt with other emotional and psychological issues. She had lost 4kgs within 7 days!
The role of acceptance is further emphasized in this episode. Rikhia’s in-laws were not ready to accept the fact that Rohaan is a child with special needs and requires treatment and therapy. This further led to an impact on the mental health of the primary caregiver, his mother. Her husband supported her despite the ignorance from his family and diligently took care of the needs of his son and his family.
Tune in to this episode with Ms. Rikhia and know all about the role of acceptance in the life of a caregiver. She has also shared some useful tips for other fellow caregivers that can help them take better care of their mental health.
