Journaling is a helpful technique for a number of reasons such as improving mood, self esteem, academic or professional performance and so many more mental health and psychological issues.

With the help of writing journals, you can reflect upon many of your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. This reflective thinking can thereby enhance one’s understanding of themselves.

The important question that arises here is that how do you cultivate the habit of journalling. If you are having trouble getting started with journaling, here are 10 questions that one should ask themselves when recording a journal.

Question 1: How did you spend your alone time today?

This question can target self-reflection on thoughts as well as habits. When we are alone, we are truest to ourselves. Answering this question can lead to a better understanding of our personal thinking habits and behaviour.

Question 2: What was your biggest lesson today?

We live in a world where we are surrounded by media overload. People hardly spent time with their thoughts. If you do wish to improve your personal growth then answering a question as above can define new paths for your achievements.

Question 3: What did you do really well today?

When we acknowledge our achievements and appreciate them it can work as a positive reinforcement for our future endeavours. Answering this question can develop a habit of self-appreciation which is paying gratitude and being kind to ourselves.

Question 4: How did you take care of your health today?

Health is very important! Some of us have a neglected attitude towards taking care of our health. Well, you can overcome this negligence by answering this question in your journal every day. It will keep on track of health record-keeping and you can improve physical and mental wellbeing from sharing your thoughts in the journal.

Question 5: What are your priorities for the next day?

Do you find difficult to follow deadlines and designate priorities? You can challenge this behaviour by planning your priorities ahead of time. Setting priority is a helpful approach to meeting deadlines and being more efficient at work. Another advantage of journaling is improving memory which again helps one manage their priorities.

Question 6: How well did you communicate with people today?

One should value communication in terms of expressing their feelings and opinion at work, with family or in a relationship and in order to do so it is important to ask yourself if you are able to emote your feelings through communication. This can lead you to overcome the gap due to misunderstanding and miscommunication.

Question 7: What is the one thing that you learned today at your school, college or workplace?

Self-improvement can only come when we aspire to learn new things and improve habits that have not been helpful. We can imbibe these habits from peers, teachers, managers and many other people around us. We can also improve by expanding our knowledge of the world and its people. This is another question that can help your make room for improvement by learning new things from our surroundings.

Question 8: What can you improve?

You can ask yourself what you can improve in terms of personal development, work related development or it can also be for improving our relationships with our partner or family or our children.

Question 9: What are you most grateful for today?

Every day has something to be grateful about, be it, our health, our family’s wellbeing, any latest achievements or even our personal growth. Gratitude has been found to improve our mental health and is associated with greater happiness.

Question 10: What is the one thing about you that makes other people happy?

The last question provides a second person’s perspective and that even a positive one. Use this approach with your family members, partner or children as an interactive and bonding activity. It will make everyone feel nice about themselves.

Lead a more positive lifestyle by keeping track of your thoughts and feelings and gaining control over them. Journalling, rightfully, focuses on developing emotional skills that stay for a lifestyle and therefore help in combating mental health problems, relationship problems, emotional and psychological issues that can affect anyone at any point of their lifetime.
