Learning how not to ignore your Thoughts and Feelings

thoughts and feelings

Thoughts and Feelings can have great effects on our mental as well as physical wellbeing.

As we leave 2020 behind and enter into 2021 a new year most of us are looking towards a fresh start, new beginning or a new chapter in life. There is no doubt in the fact that 2020 was a tough year for all of us, we went through a lot of things mentally, physically and emotionally. There were various ways in which all of us dealt with our problems; some chose to concentrate solely on work and fitness whereas some completely ignored what was going on within them by diverting their mind but with the new year setting in its time we stop ignoring our thoughts and feelings by accepting them.

When we act according to how we are feeling it helps us make wise decisions and choices. It is important to be able to identify the reasons for your feelings. According to Psychology Today ,by confusing anxiety with excitement  we miss out on a lot of important events, by confusing excitement and happiness we lose out on contentment.

We all dislike the negative emotions like anger, anxiety, panic, depression, jealousy, etc. the more we try to hide from such emotions they will find a way to get at you (Verma 2018). If these feelings and thoughts are not dealt with, they cause sleeplessness, tiredness and irritability. But we should not believe all our thoughts because most of the time they are a result of us overthinking something, hence most of the time they are negative or painful emotions.

Ways on how you can accept your thoughts and feelings:

As discussed earlier we should not believe all our thoughts because sometimes they are just stories that have happened in the past or that might or might not happen in the future or sometimes they are just interpretations of what can happen in the future. In such situations it is better to give your mind a break (Chauncey 2017) by just telling yourself that you are overthinking the situation.

When we are going through something make sure you are well aware of the facts. In your mind make pointers as to what has happened, what is happening and what you can do about it. Accept your feelings if you try to avoid how you feel it will come back to haunt you. So it’s better that you accept what you feel.

Free form of journaling can also be of great help where you write down whatever you are thinking and feeling and how you are dealing with it. This could be done as an activity before going to be (Verma 2018). Meditation and mindfulness is also said to be helpful in such situations as it organises your thoughts and helps in dealing with your feelings.

With the new year setting in, let’s learn not to ignore our thoughts and feelings because it is time that we stop suppressing such things because they can affect us mentally, emotionally and physically. And here’s to hoping 2021 will be a better year for everyone!

Our thoughts and feelings greatly affect the way we view the world and how we accept it is one of the biggest challenges, we as humans face.
