Ms. Sakshi Agarwal holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and loves to read, travel and binge watch shows. Ms. Sakshi is a sister to a 15 year old special child and joins this podcast episode with MHT to share her role and responsibilities as a caregiver to her brother who has mild Cerebral Palsy due to which he has some difficulty walking. Along with that, she has also been supporting her brother with his learning disabilities.
From understanding the diagnosis to acceptance to then providing unconditional support leads to a heavy toll on caregivers’ mental health. Moreover, supporting an individual diagnosed with cerebral palsy can mean providing long term care to that individual physically as well as mentally.
Ms. Sakshi speaks about her and her family’s experience as caregivers. She tells the listeners about the journey of supporting her brother with cerebral palsy from the very beginning- diagnosis, treatment, therapy, acceptance and now growing together as a family.
She also shares a phase of her school life when she felt neglected as her parents had to devote more time to their son. This parental negligence made her feel lonely and impacted her mental health at a young age. She started ignoring to take care of herself and her life at school- academically as well as socially.
The importance of maintaining individuality is the topic of discussion in this episode. As time passed by, Sakshi has been trying to give more importance to her individuality which sometimes gets affected due to the burden of caregiving.
