Childhood Emotional Neglect: How, Why and What | Deepika Bhandari | MHT India

childhood emotional neglect - deepika bhandari - mht india

Childhood Emotional Neglect can be understood as an Inability or failure to respond to a child’s emotional needs. It may not necessarily be emotional abuse but more of neglectful behaviour towards the child. Emotional Abuse, in lay man terms, can be seen as purposeful behaviour that can be hurtful in nature. Childhood Emotional Neglect on the other hans, can be seen as being unaware of the needs of the child in any form or capacity that can have lasting effects on the child.

For example, a child comes back from school and wants to talk about something that happened at school but the parent is busy or unable to do so and instead of explaining the reason ors setting out a time specifically for the same, they just tend to ignore the conversation altogether. This might be unintentional but can be seen as neglect, or in specific, Childhood Emotional Neglect.

Childhood Neglect can be seen in different ways and capacities, however Childhood Emotional Neglect can be the most harmful of all with effects that can last a lifetime.

In this MHT Live, Ms. Deepika Bhandari, a trauma-informed therapist, talks about Childhood Emotional Neglect, what it is, how it can effect us and why it happens.
