Project Semicolon was founded by Amy Bleuel on April 16, 2013. She wanted to honour her father who she lost to suicide and hence came up with the semicolon as a symbol that hopes to instil hope amongst people who are suffering from mental illness and/or addictions. The semicolon, as a symbol of courage, has been prevalent in many songs and movies and a symbol of courage and has also picked up as a favourite among the tattoo industry.
The semicolon symbol symbolizes the struggle of depression, addiction, self-injury, suicide amongst other mental health disorders and focuses on individuals’ will to continue on.
In an interview with the ‘Trauma and Mental Health Report’, Amy spoke about the meaning behind the semicolon. She said, “It represents continuance. Authors usually use the semicolon when they choose not to end the sentence. You are the author and the sentence is your life, and you’re choosing to continue.”
“Project Semicolon” represents a goal; to believe that this is not the end but a new beginning and MHT India vehemently stands with the same. We wish to promote the philosophy that ‘this is not the end’ and no matter how difficult the situation gets, there is more to the story.
