A stage of sleep , characterized by electroencephalogram(EEG)activity resembling that of waking ( low -voltage, fast), in which the muscles of the body go limp, the person is very difficult to arouse ,and the eyes move rapidly from side to side; associated with dreaming.Sometimes called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
